Mount Sibayak Sunrise Hike or Day Hike from Berastagi

We had a fantastic trip to the Mount Sibayak (daytrip). Even though it was cloudy, it was still an amazing trip because our guide, Nusan Karo Karo, knew so much about the area. At the top he served us tea and croissants, which was lovely. We had a great time and can’t complain. We can 100% recommend this trip.

We did the Mount Sibayak sunrise hike and were picked up from our hotel at 4:15am by our driver and our guide, Fitri. Fitri was an absolute force of nature — full of energy, funny, incredibly knowledgeable about the volcano and the local flora and fauna, and also very caring and attentive throughout the hike. We climbed up in the darkness and reached the top at around 6:20am, just in time for sunrise. Fitri made us cups of hot tea while we watched the sun come up and then took lots of photos for us. After sunrise, we went down into the crater, which was one of the most interesting parts of the hike. Fitri showed us and explained the different volcanic features, including steaming vents, pools of boiling water and sulphur crystals. We spent some time exploring the crater before beginning the descent. At the bottom we met our driver again and drove down to the hot springs, where we soaked our weary muscles for a while before returning to our hotel at around 10:30am. The whole trip was really good, but it was Fitri who made it special. Her enthusiasm, knowledge, humour and genuine care for us made a very good experience into a memorable one. I would highly recommend this tour, and if Fitri is available, definitely request her as your guide.

Had such an amazing experience with Nusan, I did the 4AM trip from Berastagi and it was absolutely worth the early morning. He's very knowledgeable and we got to climb down into the crater which was fantastic, and explored some of the flora along the way. Highly recommend!

We did the Mount Sibayak day hike starting with being picket up at our hotel at 8 am, as we didn’t want to get up for sunrise, and it was absolutely worth it. You definitely don’t need to do the sunrise hike to have a great experience. Our guide Nusa was fantastic. He spoke excellent English, by far the best of any guide we met in North Sumatra, and knew a lot about the local flora, fauna and surrounding area. He pointed out interesting things along the trail and made the hike much more enjoyable and informative, beyond just having a guide for safety. After the hike, we visited the hot springs and walked through the local fruit market. Altogether, we were out for around six hours, making it a great half-day/day activity from Berastagi. We booked directly with Nusa, which was a little cheaper than booking through GetYourGuide or TripAdvisor. Highly recommended!
