You will visit very unique, religious town with a knowledgeable licensed local guide. We will help you understand Koyasan as much as possible. We visit two most sacred areas in Koyasan. One is Garan-monastic complex and the other is Okunoin-the holy place for Kobo Daishi (the founder of Shingon Buddhism in Japan) belief. And we also visit Kongobuji temple, the head temple of Koyasan Shingon Buddhism. You will be able to learn about real Koyasan only a local guide knows. We walk about 3 km in Okunoin feeling the sacred atmosphere created by hundreds of thousands of gravestones standing on both sides of the pass flanked by tall centuries-old cedar trees.

Koyasan Danjo Garan
You will visit the main hall of Koyasan and Kompon Daito (the fundamental pagoda) to know the teaching of Kobo Daishi-Kukai, the founder of Koyasan and learn about Japanese religion.

Koyasan Okunoin
Okunoin is the largest cemetery and the most sacred place in Koyasan. You will walk 2km to visit Kobo Daishi mausoleum, feeling mysterious atmosphere.

Kongobu-ji Temple
Finally you will visit the head temple of Koyasan Shingon Esoteric Buddhism. You will see gorgeous paintings on sliding doors depicted about 400 years ago and beautiful rock garden.

Take a bus for Daimon-Minamichushajo at Koyasan Station (Cable Car). and get off the bus at Daimon (Bus stop No. 21), one stop before Final destination, Daimon-Minamichushajo. I will meet you at the bus stop.

Enhance your Koyasan experience

Koyasan is a wonderful place that you could enjoy on your own. But you will be more enlightened, intellectually and spiritually, if you allow Noriko-san to guide you. She can adapt to your particular interests, answer your questions, and provide insight about various Buddhist sects, particularly sects of esoteric Buddhism which has its origins and home in Koyasan. With knowledge, reverence, and a touch of humor, Noriko-san will make your visit magical.

Koyasan Private Tour with Noriko Hosokawa San

I recently experienced a private 6 hour tour exploring Koyasan, and I cannot recommend Noriko San enough. From the start, when it was raining heavily as we first met, she handled the weather with absolute grace. She was completely professional, keeping us engaged with fascinating stories about the history of Koyasan, including the incredible tale of how Kobo Daishi walked up to Koyasan from the Choishi-michi Trail, while we navigated the wet conditions, and even thoughtfully took us to buy umbrellas so we could stay comfortable. Navigating the vast temple complexes and the ancient graveyard at Okunoin can be overwhelming on your own, but having Noriko San led to a deeply enriching and seamless experience. She tailored the pacing wonderfully over the 6 hours, ensuring we didn't miss any must-see sights while still allowing moments for quiet reflection. If you are visiting Koyasan, request Noriko San for an authentic and masterfully guided journey.

First experience and I highly recommend!!

We have never booked a private tour before, so our first experience was absolutely delightful. Noriko was very communicative prior to meeting which helped relieve some stress. Her knowledge of Koyasan was 100% worth the cost. We even had a teenager who wasn’t feeling that great (we thought jet lag but it was an earache) and she was very patient with him being quiet and more reclusive as the day went on. I highly recommend booking with Noriko if you want to learn more history, culture, and religion.

Perfect day in Koyasan with Noriko

Noriko was simply outstanding— our time with her in Koyasan was one of the highlights of our trip to Japan. She is a master storyteller, and brought great insight and depth to all of the sacred sights that we visited. She is also very kind and thoughtful— when our teenage daughter felt unwell, she personally walked her back to our lodging and made sure that she was provided a place to rest, even though it was not yet time for us to check in. With her perfect English, Noriko was able to explain in a very short time the historical and spiritual significance of both Koyasan and its founder— Kobodaishi. A truly unforgettable experience.

Wonderful day at a magical place

Noriko is not only a very knowledgeable guide, she is also the kindest person. During the day we've spent on Koyasan she taught us so much about Kobo Daishi. At the mausoleum we got to say a prayer together.

A unique, insightful and flexible day exploring Koyasan

We had a wonderful day with Noriko, who was extremely knowledgeable, adjusted the itinerary to suit us, and was a pleasure to spend the day with. We even shared in a Kechien Kanjo ritual, which was unplanned but an amazing experience. Even without this, we would have had an amazing day immersed in Japanese history while exploring Koyasan. I'd highly recommend it to fully appreciate this special, unique place.

Koyasan magic

An incredible journey through the beginnings of esoteric Buddhism as told by Noriko whilst visiting the site of Koyasan. . The temples and shrines but most of all the cemetery of over 200,000 people going back over 1000 years. It is a beautiful restful place where some of the greatest war lords are memorialized. This is a must see , even the train ride up the mountain is spectacular and the trip starts at the top at the magnificent Daimon gate
