While the Good Friday Agreement formally ended the Troubles in 1998, the walls remain, with some communities still viewing them as necessary for safety, though they also serve as a reminder of the ongoing sectarian divide. The first "peace lines" were temporary barriers erected by the British army in 1969 at the height of the Troubles to separate communities during clashes.
