The Belfast Peace Walls are a series of barriers that separate predominantly Catholic/Nationalist and Protestant/Unionist neighbourhoods in Belfast, Northern Ireland, built during the Troubles to prevent violence between the communities. While the Good Friday Agreement formally ended the Troubles in 1998, the walls remain, with some communities still viewing them as necessary for safety, though they also serve as a reminder of the ongoing sectarian divide. The first "peace lines" were temporary barriers erected by the British army in 1969 at the height of the Troubles to separate communities during clashes.
